Participant

“It was very nice to reflect on our homes.  I like presenting our work, we all live different lives but can all relate in one way or another.”

About
Frampton Park

In December 2023 and January 2024, we tested the toolkit for the first time in East London.

How we tested the toolkit

In session 1 we got to know each other and the local area through a neighbourhood mapping exercise. In session 2 we focused on their homes. In session 3 we tested out the ‘living together’ exercise.

Organising the workshops

We found a great community venue which offered childcare. We recruited and ordered in food. We had lots of interest, especially through a local parents WhatsApp group and through a special needs coordinator who was a known contact at a local school.

Activities planned

The four mums did not know each other but quickly felt comfortable and were totally engaged through all the activities and sessions.

We used these sessions to test out techniques for the first time and asked questions about food choices, timings and venues which were then helpful for the rest of the pilot sessions.

While having a plan for the session activities we were mindful of the need to keep things flexible, so the group had time to get to know each other, discuss what was important to them, listen to and support each other.

We decided not to hold a walking tour as the weather was very cold. It is good to have a backup plan in similar situations.

Insights

We were able to gently test out the techniques for the first time and were delighted that the combination of a comfortable space and good childcare meant the parents were able to focus incredibly well on the tasks. The parents produced a lot of work which they were then able to discuss clearly. The worksheets worked well and provided the right amount of space for writing, along with the helpful prompts.

Overall the balance of facilitating and listening worked really well.
